Chocolate is a temptation for both young children and adults. We may find this sweet delight in different forms- chocolate spread, chocolate cookies, normal chocolate candies etc. Who has not grated at least one in his/her life with the spoon in the empty jar of chocolate? Not to mention the children, who usually eat the chocolate with all of their face. The proud mothers of these children are constantly looking for a way to remove the stubborn stains from the clothes, the carpet or the upholstery. In this article I would like to give you advice about how you can get rid of the chocolate stains once and for all.
The first thing you need to do is to be fast in your reaction. The sooner you take care of the chocolate stains, the better. Do not throw the clothes with the stains in the washing machine because the stain can not only remain, but it can also spread to the other clothes in the washing machine. So, think twice before you opt for the easiest way. If you want to get rid of the stain, treat the stain while it is still fresh. Scrape any pieces of chocolate which remain, but keep in mind that you need to be careful in doing this otherwise there is a chance of spreading the chocolate around and making the stain even bigger. If you want you can even put the garment with the stain in the fridge for a while, until the chocolate strengthen. It will be easier for you to remove the extra pieces of chocolate and avoid its spreading.
Secondly, apply a liquid stain remover and wait till it soaks into the stain. Now, you can put it in the washing machine for laundry. Contrary to the expectations, do not use hot water because it can “seal” the stain. Do not underestimate the inside tag for washing instructions. If the garment is white, you can add bleach as well.
But what if the stain still remains? Then be smart and pay attention on what the chocolate consists of… the answer is hidden there. Most of the chocolates have milk as their main ingredient. So, soak the stain in enzyme-based detergent to remove it. Enzymes will absorb the dairy ingredients in the chocolate.
The chocolate stains can appear not only on your clothing, but also on the carpet. Do not be afraid of it, it is not the end of your carpet. Start with vacuum cleaning of the extra crumbs from the floor. This will prevent you to step on them, smash them and make the situation even worse. So far, it is pretty much the same with the clothing. Then you can apply stain remover, but CarpetCleaning Chelsea advises to be careful with it, especially if your carpet is colorful. Because of the chemicals, some detergents can wash away the colors. Do not rub the stain, just leave the detergent absorb into the tissues of the carpet. After that put a towel or a kitchen paper over the problematic area and press it hard to it, again without rubbing. The idea in doing this is to absorb the moisture from the detergent. Do not use hair dryer to make the stain dry faster, because if the stain is not cleaned perfectly, the hot air will “seal” the stain and you cannot get rid of it.
With the upholstery you need to be a bit more careful. The problem is that its fabric is very fragile and thin. In cleaning the stains from the upholstery, one basic rule is never to apply detergent which consists bleach on it. Otherwise, you will not only clean the stains, but also you will get rid of the color. If you still like the color of your upholstery, and you just want to get rid of the chocolate stain on it, you may mix soap and water and apply it on the stain. Then leave it to dry by itself.
It may happen to anybody to spill something. Do not lose your temper in such cases. Even the chocolate stains can be removed if you know how to do it. In conclusion I can advise two things: first- do not wait till the stain absorbs in the tissues and second- do not rub the stains if you do not want to make a big shapeless figure on your brand new upholstery or dress.
